Crying, but in a good way

Damn good thing I was really awake!  I had been thinking of a photograph I wanted to post, but couldn't find, and decided to google images with "Lorna" in the Search.  If you are faint of heart or high on the vanity scale, please refrain from googling images with your own name in them.  It is a humbling, fascinating, foolish way to spend time.  However photoless and daunted I was with googling my own name, I decided to put in the names of all the people in the photo, and lo! there we were:
Julia, Emma, Sarah and me, with Mum seated
This is a copy of a copy---four generations of Cowling-Cunningham-Spinneys,  taken at Christmas, 2005.

This was our last Christmas with my mother, and a lovely one, family-centred and joyful.  We had changed our family tradition from being at my mom and dad's house with my siblings and their kids to Christmas at our place, which we were  adjusting to reasonably well.   We were still in a big house, with a dining room and a huge windowed kitchen that still didn't have enough room for all the things we knew were essential to Christmas dinner.  It's not that we were more joyful or more loving then, but we were more traditional.  And this photo makes me nostalgic for those times and those activities that were so right for the family we were when we posed for this picture.  Even though you can only see us, I can see all the other people who were there, and the ones we were missing.

I am so grateful to Bruce, my friend and son-in-law, whose idea it was to take this photo, and whose artistic being made the taking a joy in itself.

  2. Yes remembering when the house was bursting with guests is nice and bitter sweet as we remember loved ones passed away and always still with us.

  3. Great picture. All of my pictures have stories behind them, too.

  4. You've made me think of my photo of Mom's last Christmas with us. I still am not really "down with" her being gone. It grabs me by the gut sometimes.
